African Tiger Fish 4" (Hydrocynus Goliath) (fwf odd afr tiger golia)

African Tiger Fish 4" (Hydrocynus Goliath)

Common Name:  Goliath Tiger Fish, African Tiger Fish, Tiger Fish, Tiger Characin (Hydrocunus Goliath)

Scientific Name:  Hydrocynus Goliath

Origin: Goliath Tiger Fish are native to Africa. They are found throughout Africa in many rivers.

Size:This fish is considered a monster fish. It can reach sizes up to 3-4 feet and weigh over 60 pounds.

Habitat: This species is often found in the fast flowing parts of the Congo River.

Water:  The temperature in the tank should range from: 72-82 F (22 - 28 C). the PH should be kept between 6.5-7.5

Diet: African Tiger fish are omnivores. In the wild they consume all types of fish, crustaceans, and insects. In a home aquarium they tend to prefer live food at first. Once acclimated to their new surroundings they will accept frozen foods and even pellets. They prefer live food over frozen or pellet if presented at the same time.

Aquarium: Goliath Tiger fish require a very large aquarium. It is recommended to keep this species in a large tank of at least 1,000 gallons (fully grown) if kept with other similar sized fish. A single specimen can survive in smaller tanks. They require open space for swimming. Hobbyists should look for long tanks. The aquarium should also contain some driftwood or plants to provide some cover for hiding. Good filtration is especially important.

Breeding: Hydrocynus Goliath has not successfully been bred in captivity. Males tend to be fuller and larger than females. However, some suggest that females are broader in the stomach.

Behavior: Goliath Tiger Fish although aggressive can be kept in schools or with similarly aggressive fish. Due to their sharp teeth, it is not recommended to keep smaller fish with them. They will most likely devour anything they can fit in their mouth. Goliath Tiger Fish are best kept in a species tank.
